The photographer’s secret rough draft is now on museum walls.

By Sarah Boxer

I miss contact sheets. I miss those grids of small photos that show you exactly what’s on a roll of developed film. I miss them so much that now, when I take digital pictures, I don’t delete any: I download everything from my camera to my computer to get lots of thumbnail-size images—some blurry, some not; some memorable, some not; some in series, some not. There they are, rows upon rows on my screen. A virtual contact sheet. And yet nothing like a contact sheet.

The contact sheet is the most direct, intimate thing in film-based photography. There’s nothing virtual about it. After light hits the film in your camera and after the exposed film is developed, you create a contact sheet by bringing the negative in direct contact with a sheet of photographic paper and shining light on it again. The end result is usually a grid of images, or really a stack of strips, small prints of what you shot, exactly the size of the negatives. Adding to the physicality of this object, photographers often draw directly on their contact sheets with an orange or red crayon, marking up the images they plan to enlarge and print.

If three museum shows are any indication, I don’t think I’m alone in my nostalgia for this object.”

This past September, when nearly all the world’s leaders were in New York for a meeting of the United Nations, Platon, a staff photographer for this magazine, set up a tiny studio off the floor of the General Assembly, and tried to hustle as many of them in front of his lens as possible. For months, members of the magazine’s staff had been writing letters to various governments and embassies, but the project was a five-day-long improvisation, with Platon doing his best to lure the likes of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Hugo Chávez, and Muammar Qaddafi to his camera.

Alfred Gregory obituary
Mountaineer and photographer who recorded the Everest expedition of 1953
Quote:

"Everest doesn't leave you. People still want to know about it. I don't know how many pictures I took, but it was fewer than photographers would take today. No special equipment – I just kept the camera warm inside my jacket. I went up Everest as an amateur photographer, but I came down a professional."

[...] As research libraries and archives are discovering, “born-digital” materials — those initially created in electronic form — are much more complicated and costly to preserve than anticipated.

Electronically produced drafts, correspondence and editorial comments, sweated over by contemporary poets, novelists and nonfiction authors, are ultimately just a series of digits — 0’s and 1’s — written on floppy disks, CDs and hard drives, all of which degrade much faster than old-fashioned acid-free paper. Even if those storage media do survive, the relentless march of technology can mean that the older equipment and software that can make sense of all those 0’s and 1’s simply don’t exist anymore.

Imagine having a record but no record player.

Facity is an online photo project in which photographers from cities around the world submit portraits documenting faces found within their respective cities. The project, which started at the end of 2008 in Berlin, has grown to 88 photographers in 58 different cities, and currently publishes 10-15 new portraits per day.

Facity attempts to ensure a similar look across each submitted portrait by publishing aesthetic guidelines they call the FACITY manifest. These rules govern everything from lighting (indoor natural light) to equipment (50mm lens at f/2.Cool, and seem to be quite effective at standardizing the style of submitted portraits. [...]

If you’d like to participate, you can volunteer to be either a model or a photographer. The only requirement for being a model is that you need to live in a city that has a photographer, while volunteering as a photographer requires that you create at least one portrait per week for six months.

When a picture seems too good to be true

Quote:
When Reuters moved pictures on Friday of volcanic ash from the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland and the consequent disruptions to air travellers that this caused world-wide, one picture stood out from all of the others — so much so it was the clear choice for our coverage in the Herald. Well, we wanted it to be but something about it didn’t seem quite right.

It was a powerful picture for sure, showing billowing volcanic plumes pushing high above an agricultural setting of green fields and farm houses, contrasted against a big blue sky. A remarkable picture certainly — but we began to wonder if perhaps it was a little too remarkable.

SFMOMA has been collecting and exhibiting photographs since the museum's founding in 1935 and is dedicated to the examination of the medium in all its forms. This major symposium on the current state of the field is the first in a series of public programs on photography. The texts below reflect the initial responses of 13 invited participants to the symposium's central question: Is photography over? The discussion begun here will continue on April 22 and 23, when the participants will convene at SFMOMA for a series of public and private conversations on the current state of the medium.

The World’s Largest Panorama, Dubai in 45 Gigapixels

Quote:
There seems to have been a veritable ‘gigapixel’ war brewing for these last few months, as world records for the largest panoramic images are being smashed at a break-neck pace. The record was at 18 gigapixels in December 2009, it became of 26 gigapixels in March 2010 and, now, it’s at 45 gigapixels thanks to a stunning, new panoramic view of Dubai. The quality of the image is not extraordinary, as the author points out, but, as a technical achievement, it’s certainly impressive.

“This was only ever intended to be a technical test - I'm making no claims with regards [to] photographic quality or artistic merit! It was more about exploring the limits of both the hardware and software that is available out there,” Gerald Donovan, who shot the photos and created the panoramic image, wrote.

4,250 individual shots taken with a Canon 7D and the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L zoom at 400mm. Total shooting time circa 3 hours 30 minutes, in 37C heat (that's the temperature in the shade - the camera and lens were almost too hot to touch at the end of this),” he explained.

The shots were taken last week and then stitched together using dedicated software. The 4,250 images put together add up to a 45-gigapixel, 44.88 to be precise, image, the largest panoramic view in the world at the moment, by a fair margin.

The level of detail is impressive, if you’ve thought about visiting Dubai, this is your chance to check out plenty of the locations and the sights from the comfort of your desk. The tallest building in the world, the Burj Dubai, is at the center of the image, fitting perhaps for the largest panoramic image in the world. The image is hosted by GigaPan, a project developed by the Carnegie Mellon University with help from NASA and Google. The previous record was set a couple of months ago by a 26-gigapixel image of Paris.

Leica film camera beats digital to North Pole

Quote:
A Leica film camera has survived a 60-day trek to the North Pole, recording images impossible to capture on digital equipment, says photographer and explorer Martin Hartley.

A specially-tested Leica MP endured temperatures dipping to minus 40 degrees Celsius on a 483-mile expedition for the Catlin Arctic Survey, a project that aims to capture scientific data relating to the way CO2 affects marine life in the Arctic.

'At these temperatures, battery-powered electronic devices become unreliable and are prone to failure, cameras being no exception,' said Martin who carried the Leica MP around his neck in a thin waterproof bag to stop moisture from his breath freezing on the viewfinder.

'These low temperatures cause everything to shrink - autofocus lenses become too tight and have to be focused manually and aperture leafs often jam.

'It is during these times that photographic opportunities can be lost. This happens because cameras or batteries are often stuffed under several layers of clothes to keep them warm, and the effort to take the cameras and batteries out is just too much, especially when survival is more important than anything.'

First produced in 2003, the Leica MP is a fully mechanical camera which can be operated without batteries.

Exclusive: The unseen photographs that throw new light on the First World War

A treasure trove of First World War photographs was discovered recently in France. Published here for the first time, they show British soldiers on their way to the Somme. But who took them? And who were these Tommies marching off to die?

A previously undiscovered method of image making dating from the 1820s may force a re-write of the photographic history books, claim researchers.

Criticul Foto s-a mutat

Quote:

Hasan M. Elahi

Quote:
Poke around his site and you'll find more than 20,000 images stretching back three years. Elahi has documented nearly every waking hour of his life during that time. He posts copies of every debit card transaction, so you can see what he bought, where, and when. A GPS device in his pocket reports his real-time physical location on a map. Elahi's site is the perfect alibi. Or an audacious art project. Or both. The Bangladeshi-born American says the US government mistakenly listed him on its terrorist watch list — and once you're on, it's hard to get off. To convince the Feds of his innocence, Elahi has made his life an open book. Whenever they want, officials can go to his site and see where he is and what he's doing. Indeed, his server logs show hits from the Pentagon, the Secretary of Defense, and the Executive Office of the President, among others. The globe-hopping prof says his overexposed life began in 2002, when he stepped off a flight from the Netherlands and was detained at the Detroit airport. He says FBI agents later told him they'd been tipped off that he was hoarding explosives in a Florida storage unit; subsequent lie detector tests convinced them he wasn't their man. But with his frequent travel — Elahi logs more than 70,000 air miles a year exhibiting his art work and attending conferences — he figured it was only a matter of time before he got hauled in again. He might even be shipped off to Gitmo before anyone realized their mistake. The FBI agents had given him their phone number, so he decided to call before each trip; that way, they could alert the field offices. He hasn't been detained since.

http://trackingtransience.net/

Quote:
Two years ago, Elahi appeared on the Colbert Report and explained that if 300 million Americans did this, the FBI would have to employ millions of agents just to keep up with the data flood.

Robert Bergman: Portraits, 1986–1995
http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/2009/bergman/template/index.shtm

On the occasion of his three one-person exhibitions, Robert Bergman welcomed Art Editor John Yau to his New York City studio to talk about his life and work. - http://brooklynrail.org/2009/10/art/robert-bergman-with-john-yau

Quote:
Every now and then, the art world offers up an unlikely story, and Robert Bergman's is one of them. The 65-year-old photographer went his own way over the past four decades, never selling a work until two years ago, but he nevertheless is about to burst onto the scene with two museum exhibitions this month. One is at the prestigious, conservative National Gallery of Art in Washington. The other is at P.S.1 in Queens, the adventurous branch of the Museum of Modern Art. And next month he will have his first show at a commercial gallery, Yossi Milo in Chelsea.
